Hi guys! We are Lily and Elliot. We’ll introduce
various of information about the UK in Japanese
and English.English culture, Films, Politics,
British English Phrasing and much more! We will
deliver every topic of “the UK” which you would
want to know!
First, Let us introduce ourselves….
▼Lily: Japanese and Russian who can’t speak
Russian. I love the UK and Art!
▼Elliot: British(England)! Loving the guitar,
gaming and Japan
We both like Hayley Williams [Paramore] and
Sherlock [TV show] 😉
So, as this is the first time… We will begin with
“5 basic points about the UK” with small info
1.The formal name of the UK
The formal name of the UK is “The United
Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern
Ireland” and in Japanese, “グレートブリテン
及びアイルランド連合王国” That’s kind of long
Only a few people can probably remember the
In 1800. About 200 years ago, Great Britain and
Ireland joined to form the United Kingdom of
Great Britain and Ireland. Also “Great Britain
Kingdom” was formed in 1707 by the Kingdom
of England, Wales and the Scottish Kingdom!
You may think it’s weird that Japanese people
refer to Britain as “Igirisu [イギリス]”…. This is
because in Portuguese, English is “Inglês” and
Japanese people could easily understand
”Egeresu”, then it was changed to “Igirisu”
…. Isn’t it interesting? In my opinion “Britain”
sounds easier to understand than “Igirisu”
Already as you know, Japan has a Royal Family
as well. At the moment (October, 2017)The UK’S
queen is Elizabeth II. She was born in 21th April
1921, So She is 91years old now! She is still pretty
but young Queen Elizabeth II was very a beautiful
and elegant woman. Young queen is here
You would think that young queen seems really
similar with Prince Charles. By the way, did you
know all of Britain land is owned by Queen
Elizabeth II! Also, she owns 1/6 of Earth’s land.
There are still a lot of information about the
Royal Family so we will make many articles
in the future about this topic.
In 2017, The UK’s population is 65.64 million.
Ranking it at 21st in the world.Japan has a
populous of 127 million. So The UK has about
the half of population of Japan. [Japan is ranked
10th. In the city of population ranking, Tokyo
is the top]

Next, Look at the graph. Lots of Fifties. we are
twenties. Seems to kind of increased but then
the decline began …. Recently, an increase has
begun again. For Japan, a lot of sixties and forties,
Every year the birthrate is decreasing.
The land area of the UK is 242,495 km². The world
ranking is 80th. But aforementioned, Queen
Elizabeth II owns 1/6 of the world’s land. If they
were to include this, the ranking would be 14th.
Japan is 377,972 km². So it’s not so large. The US,
has 9,333,517 km², The first rank is Russia at a
staggering 17,098,242 km²! So … if Japan were to
join with Russia it would be at 45. In the case of
the UK, it would be at 70! Now we can visualise
how much bigger Russia is in comparison.
Anyway like this, The UK’s land is not so big and
doesn’t have a large population. But why does
Britain have such high impacts on the world?
Because The UK is an appealing and charming,
I guess, many people are thinking that The UK
equals ”rain”. Of course The UK is one of the
rainiest country’s in the world but Japan’s
annual rainfall is higher than in the UK.

Also many Japanese use an umbrella but on
other hand, British don’t use them so much.
They prevent rain with a cap or parka’s hood
etc. The UK’s weather is mainly “cloud” and the
overall temperature is cooler. Northern areas
like Scotland are also windy. Scotland has vast
amounts of countryside and fewer buildings
than in London.
That’s all for “5 basic points about the UK”.
The UK is absolutely one of the most
interesting countries in the world.
Also, There are some similar points from
Japan. Having a Royal Family, Island country,
like teas… Let’s find out a lot more about
