Just south west of Spain you will find the Canary Islands. Gofio is the more traditional food here and the oldest recipes for Canarian food. This dish was created by the original inhabitants, the Guanches, and remains the main staple. This age old recipe comes from maiz, barley and wheat that is roasted and then stone ground into a flour. Gofio can be added to many dishes and even added to ice cream. Those who love fish will know that they are in paradise as they experience the Canary Islands holidays. Fish and sea food dishes will be found in abundance here. The best known vegetarian dish is the hot pot of chick peas called Potaje de Berros. The islands of La Palma and Flor de Guia are well known for their smoked cheese, a specialty of theirs. On the islands of Caldereta and Sancocho Canario, you will find the most typical food which is fish with a Mojo sauce. When it comes to sweets and desserts, you will find many exotic fruits as the base ingredient. Always in high demand is the fried bananas. If you are interested in wines, the you should experience the Malvasia from Lanzarote. There are also red wines of El Hierro and don’t forget to try the alcoholic specialties of other islands which is Honey Rum. Once you have visited a few of these island, you will discover that each one is radically different from the others. There are some historians who claim that the legendary continent of Atlantis was located in this area and Christopher Columbus stopped here during is travels to the New World.
