Going on ski holidays this year? You already have destination and you just picked up your gear – so now what? Here are a few skiing basics to get you into your ski boots and onto the slopes.

Getting your boots on properly

First make sure you have the right size. Then make sure you don’t have any folds in your socks or it will hurt your feet. The buckles go on the outside. Put your foot in the boot and fasten the power strap. Then, fasten the buckles – starting at your toes – so that your boots are snug. Your heel should not lift up when you stand.

Carrying your skis

There are many ways to carry skis. You can carry them under your arm. Or, if you carry them up on your shoulder, be sure to hold the tip down with your hand so you do not hit anyone behind you. You can also use your ski poles to carry your skis.

Walking in boots

It is hard to walk with your buckles fastened so loosen the straps and unbuckle the top clips completely. This allows your ankles to bend a little. You can rock on your feet from toe to heel as you walk.

Getting into your skis

Put your toe in the ski binds first and then your heel. Try putting in one foot at a time so you don’t slide backwards or lose your balance.
