A hostal and a hostel are two different things. Hostel with an “e” is for the youths and the actual name for these places is Albergues Juveniles. All hotel-like accommodations in Barcelona are given one of three names which are: hotel, hostal and pension. You can be easily mislead if you do not know the difference. A pension and hostal are the same things and a hostal is similar to a hotel just more like a guest house. It is possible for a hostal to offer equal, if not better sometimes, accommodations than some hotels, and in the same price range. A hostel can save you up to fifty percent in cost compared to a hotel, but it depends on what you want. Hostals are smaller then hotels, less formal but more friendly than hotels and hostels will not offer air conditioning or satellite TV.
