As the last of our recent snow fall begins to melt, the signs that spring is jut around the corner are already starting to show.

From wonderful, clear mornings to a change in birdsong, it really is only a matter of time before those shorts come out and your winter coats are hidden away in the attic for another year. Of course, with the beginning of spring comes an urge for many to book their next holiday, and let’s be honest, who could blame anyone for thinking ahead in this manner? After all, the vast majority of us work all year long just to fund such a break, so getting it absolutely right is a very important task indeed…

Still, there are plenty of options to choose from when it comes to booking your next break, be it a small getaway for a few days or the best part of a month in warmer climes. One such choice which many of you will have overlooked in the past is the idea of taking a Escorted Tour holiday from The Travel Departments UK website, and this may well be the result of a few misconceptions. Yes, some holidays are looked down upon by people who simply do not understand the many perks which can be enjoyed simply by booking such a break. Well, if you too have suffered at the hands of these unhelpful misconceptions, here is a little guide to just how wide of the mark they often are.

Firstly, many people assume that a tour holiday is something which can only really be enjoyed by the elderly. This could not be further from the truth. Every single year, thousands upon thousands of people pick a tour holiday as their main getaway and age has nothing to do with it. As anyone who has ever experienced a tour holiday before will be able to attest, your fellow passengers and holidaymakers are always a varied and interesting bunch, whose ages can stem from a young child to a pensioner and beyond, so there is no truth behind this particular misconception that all tour holidays (like these from the Travel Department UK) are designed to please the elderly and no one else.

Another misconception has to do with cost. Many people assume that you are simply paying over the odds for a long coach ride. Well, if you can name a single other holiday which has the potential to take in not just entire countries, but complete continents all for a single fee, we’d love to hear about them! Yes, a tour holiday can provide unparalleled enjoyment and as long as you are open minded to the idea, you too can expect to enjoy a fantastic break.

Anytime we have the idea that it’s time for a holiday, one of the first thoughts can be the cost. Travel can be expensive and so most people will search around for the lowest cost they can find. A discount on travel can come from a travel agent who has specials that they offer their clients and discounts can also be found online for those who take the time to search for them.

Those who decide to do their cheap travel deals online will come across cheap flights, cheap hotel accommodations, cheap package deals and last minute offers that can be just what you were looking for. These online shoppers can also start their search using certain words that will narrow their search and give them options that are closer to what they want. If they have the idea to visit a tropical island, they can search for cheap island holidays and if they want to go to Florida, Cheap Florida Holidays would be the words they use.

Sometimes all it takes is to be flexible with your travel dates to find a great deal on your holiday cost but the internet is always the best place to begin your holiday getaway plans.

Going on ski holidays this year? You already have destination and you just picked up your gear – so now what? Here are a few skiing basics to get you into your ski boots and onto the slopes.

Getting your boots on properly

First make sure you have the right size. Then make sure you don’t have any folds in your socks or it will hurt your feet. The buckles go on the outside. Put your foot in the boot and fasten the power strap. Then, fasten the buckles – starting at your toes – so that your boots are snug. Your heel should not lift up when you stand.

Carrying your skis

There are many ways to carry skis. You can carry them under your arm. Or, if you carry them up on your shoulder, be sure to hold the tip down with your hand so you do not hit anyone behind you. You can also use your ski poles to carry your skis.

Walking in boots

It is hard to walk with your buckles fastened so loosen the straps and unbuckle the top clips completely. This allows your ankles to bend a little. You can rock on your feet from toe to heel as you walk.

Getting into your skis

Put your toe in the ski binds first and then your heel. Try putting in one foot at a time so you don’t slide backwards or lose your balance.

Some people will open a map of the world when they are trying to decide where to go on vacation. Once they choose an area, such a Europe, Africa or Asia or maybe Canada, they then narrow there choices by doing some research to find what special events or festivals will be taking place. A trip to Japan in the Spring is when you can take part in the Cherry Blossom festival.

If you made plans to go to Europe during the winter months, those who love to ski can book their stay at a ski resort and experience new slopes. Skiing in France will take you to the French Alps which are diverse and often referred to as being legendary. Chamonix is one of the better known villages for skiing and for high altitude alp skiing, you can find out more about Les Arcs or Val Thorens.

Knowing all about where you will go can only increase your knowledge of that area, making your trip more enjoyable. Reading online what others have said about that destination you want to visit, will help you decide if it is right for you or not. Wherever in the world you want to go, be sure to educated yourself first so you are not taken by surprise later.

The lake district is one of the loveliest vacation spots in England and holidaying in one of the many cottages in the lake district is more popular then ever before this year in Cumbria. However, if you go during the high season, and stay on and around Lake Windermere, it can be an extremely crowded place where its beauty may be compromised by flocking tourists… If you like crowds that’s fine, but if not, you can either go during non-peak times or else branch out a bit. Non peak times are ok if your schedule is flexible but many people don’t have that option, so what I prefer is to go to Coniston Water instead of staying on Windermere.

Coniston is every bit as pretty as Windermere but for some reason seems to have fewer visitors. Coniston has many items of interest, such as the home of the artist John Ruskin and the lake was the site of several speed records that were set by Malcolm Campbell and his son Donald. Donald was tragically killed during one of the attempts to set a new record. In addition, the popular children’s series, Swallows and Amazons, by Arthur Ransome was based on many features on and around Coniston. The island called Wildcat Island in the books is based on Peel Island in Consiton, and it’s possible to swim to Peel Island from the shore, or if a person is feeling less adventuresome, perhaps convince a local youth to ferry them over in a small boat.

The water is very cold most of the year, so swimming might not be the best choice! In addition to the lake, there are several peaks around the district that afford wonderful hiking trails, and the views from the tops are lovely (unless the fog has obscured everything of course). Fog on the fells can come in quickly and cause the hiker to become disoriented so it’s important to be aware of the weather and to be prepared in case of fog.

There are of course many colourful and interesting shops and restaurants in the area, but not all are open year round, so if you are there during the off season it’s best to check ahead if you have a particular spot in mind. There are also many lovely Bed and Breakfast establishments, many directly on the water and very reasonably priced, but the best digs have to be lake district cottages as these offer peace and a place to escape the other travellers. As an added treat, for the fans of Swallows and Amazons, the house that Arthur Ransome used as a basis for the farm where the Swallows stayed in the book is an actual farm which operates as a Bed and Breakfast on the bank of Coniston Water.

There are so many ways to find transportation in other countries that it can be hard to decide what to do. What’s the best option? Well, sometimes it depend on whether time or money is your biggest concern, because the fastest forms of travel aren’t always the cheapest. It also depends on the area you’re in. Either way, make sure you give prices and budget the consideration it deserves, even if it’s just for weekend breaks.

For example, in a city environment, a taxi might be more expensive than a bike or tram, and unless you’re trying to leave the city or travel to the exact opposite side, it might not even be quicker. In some cities, it’s hard for cabs to deal with all the one-way streets and traffic, so they don’t save you much time compared to biking or walking.

Many people rent scooters, which can be quicker and more convenient than catching taxis, and if you’re doing a lot of relocating during the day, it might save you a lot of money on cab fares. Consider renting a scooter if the city you’re visiting has a tradition of doing so.

If you’re in a more casual, strolling, sight-seeing mood, see what else is available in your tourist locale. You might be able to walk, ride a bike, rent a gondola, or even get in a horse-drawn carriage. It’s really up to you, and there’s no limit when you’re willing to get creative.
